Many farmers, before choosing a tractor, have to answer more than one question. We will try to answer a few frequently asked questions to company managers.<\/p>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t
Enthusiasts know that Fendt fits comparatively smaller displacement engines into their tractors. This applies whether it's the currently used Deutz AG power units or the MAN engines previously fitted to the most powerful 900 VarioTMS series. Hence the question \u2013 is a smaller engine displacement a good thing or a bad thing?<\/p>
Recognised engine manufacturing specialists are today pursuing several essential, strategic goals: achieving identical or better efficiency with lower fuel consumption, whilst simultaneously achieving reduced harmful emissions. Clearly, this technical challenge is forcing manufacturers to reduce engine displacement. Used in all sectors, including mining, construction, forestry, and agriculture.<\/p>
A smaller engine capacity doesn't always mean a shorter engine lifespan. We've stressed many times that the fuel consumption of any engine fundamentally depends only on the load. Load, especially if it's maximum and prolonged, naturally reduces the engine's lifespan. However, the engine can be protected from overload. There are ways to do this.<\/p>
One of the most widely used is the hydraulic clutch, fitted alongside the traditional friction clutch. Farmers operating Fendt tractors manufactured in the 1980s are familiar with such a clutch, the firm's Turbomatic (the word \u201eturbo\u201c here does not mean turbocharged boost, but a hydraulic coupling, referred to in English as a turboclutch) clutch, made by Voith. It has been calculated and practically confirmed that a hydraulic clutch increases the lifespan of the engine and transmission by 1.5-2 times.<\/p>
In all new Fendt tractors with Vario continuously variable transmissions, there is no main clutch, let alone a hydraulic one. However, a safety valve is installed in the hydrostatic circuit, which performs the function of a virtual hydraulic clutch. When this function is engaged, the engine is protected from shock loads, and with the help of the electronic engine control system, which allows the driver to limit the maximum permissible engine load, the power unit is also protected from prolonged overloads. Try it yourself \u2013 even when the subsoiler is lowered to the maximum depth, the Fendt tractor engine does not stop.<\/p>
But wouldn't it be simpler not to use these protective measures, but to install a larger capacity engine, which potentially has a greater service life? Definitely not. A larger capacity engine, due to its larger friction surface (influenced by larger cylinder liner, piston, and piston ring diameters, and longer piston stroke), also has greater mechanical losses. Furthermore, the pistons are heavier here. As a result, the engine's crankshaft mechanism is subjected to greater dynamic loads. Greater load is often combatted with more metal. Therefore, if you are pursuing the strategic goals mentioned at the beginning of the article, increasing displacement is not the direction that is worthwhile to pursue today.<\/p>
However, one must understand the manufacturer. Engine power can be increased by increasing its displacement or RPMs. It is also possible by precisely tuning the fuel and boost control systems. The first method is the cheapest. All others are more expensive.<\/p>
If the engine's capacity is increased, the loads acting on its moving parts inevitably increase. Therefore, it is necessary to strengthen the engine housing and the moving parts of the crankshaft and timing mechanism. However, it does happen that manufacturers deliberately overlook something to save money. As a result, even large-capacity engines suffer in terms of their lifespan and performance.<\/p>
When purchasing a tractor, it would be most accurate to focus on the ratio of the power to the engine displacement. The higher this figure, the more technically advanced the product. In this regard, \u201eFendt\u201c is at the forefront of all manufacturers. Any model from the company serves as an example: from the 312 Vario (31 hp\/1 l) to the 936 VarioTMS (50 hp\/1 l). Naturally, increasing the engine displacement (litres) deteriorates the aforementioned ratio.<\/p><\/div>
When evaluating a tractor's traction capabilities, fuel efficiency, and automation possibilities, the answer is singular \u2013 stepless. This is precisely what the \u201eFendt Vario\u201c transmission offers. We will attempt to justify this claim.<\/em><\/p> We have already mentioned that engine load has the greatest impact on fuel consumption. For example, wider tyres mean greater rolling resistance, which in turn means greater engine load, and consequently, this leads to higher fuel consumption. A wider working width implement or greater working depth means greater draft resistance. Again, the engine load and fuel consumption increase proportionally.<\/p> Engine load can be reduced or optimised by correctly selecting the gear ratios in the transmission. It is also important that the transmission can deliver the highest possible torque to the drive wheels. The tractor's traction characteristics depend on this.<\/p> The stepless Fendt Vario transmission does not have a creeper gear, which is an additional component in traditional hydromechanical or mechanical gearboxes. However, even without it, the tractor can move at a minimum speed of 0.02 km\/h (20 m\/h)! In turn, the capabilities of such a stepless Vario transmission ensure extremely high starting torque and significant tractive force as the machine accelerates.<\/p> It is considered that a gearbox with a higher number of gears is always more efficient than an analogue with a lower number of gears, because the transmission control system (or the driver) has greater freedom of choice. A continuously variable transmission (CVT) is an even better solution, as it ensures any transmission ratio, and thus the best adaptation to actual working conditions. It is also important that the transmission ratio in the transmission changes smoothly, not in steps.<\/p> The efficiency of Fendt Vario stepless transmissions has been extensively researched by N\u00fcrtingen University in Germany since 2001. The result of the research is fuel and time savings of up to 10%. This is a strong argument against traditional hydromechanical transmissions, which is also confirmed by the efforts of other manufacturers to install stepless transmissions in their products.<\/p> A question about reliability can also be answered. The Fendt registry includes the first series (we'll remind you, the Fendt Vario transmission was first demonstrated in 1995 at the Agritechnica exhibition in Germany, and mass production of Fendt 900 Vario tractors began the following year, 1996). The Fendt 900 Vario tractors, with a working life of nearly 20,000 engine hours today. For skeptics, we clarify - these tractors have accumulated so many hours with the same transmission. There are also tractors of this first series in Lithuania, but their operating time so far exceeds \u201eonly\u201c 10,000 engine hours.<\/p><\/div>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t The market is dominated by the opinion that heavier machines are designed for heavier tasks (ploughing, cultivating, sowing), while lighter machines are for lighter tasks (transport, fertilising, spraying). Of course, there is a lot of truth in this, but there are also subtleties.<\/p> The most important thing is not the abstract weight of the tractor, but the ability to correctly load its drive wheels. This is because a tractor's efficiency in the field largely depends on how well the engine power is matched with the traction surface area and its corresponding load.<\/p> Before purchasing a tractor, it is advisable to ascertain the permissible load of the machine in question. For example, the structural mass of the Fendt 936 VarioTMS tractor is 10,360 kg, with a maximum permissible mass of 18,000 kg. The permissible load is 7,640 kg, and the previously mentioned ratio of the structural and maximum permissible tractor mass is 1\/1.7. These figures indicate that the tractor's mass can be varied within a wide range and adapted for many technological operations.<\/p> Furthermore, the design of the Fendt tractor is meticulously prepared and thought out, with even the front electro-hydraulic linkage incorporated into the tractor's load concept. Integrated into the tractor's chassis, the front linkage is designed for extremely high ballast weights (1,800 and even 2,500 kg). Come on, show me a tractor that can \u201ewrestle\u201c with a load of this size at the front?<\/p> Without changing the ballast weights attached at the front, but by merely manipulating the position of the lifter, raising or lowering them slightly (thereby changing the distance to the front axle), the load on the front wheels can be altered.
