When forces are joined, we can achieve joyful results \u2013 reveals the story of Dalia Kairaitien\u0117's farm. Over 32 years, D. Kairaitis' farm has managed to adapt not only to political but also to economic changes in the country. By adopting innovations, farms can efficiently utilise their available resources and achieve economic stability. D. Kairaitien\u0117 shares how investments in innovative technology contribute to the development of farms.<\/p>\n

  1. What prompted you to take up farming?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    My interest in agriculture arose naturally from my surroundings and the political situation in Lithuania at the time. In 1940, after the Soviet Union occupied Lithuania, a socialist economic system began to be implemented: private property was abolished, and people were encouraged to work on collective farms. In 1990, after Lithuania regained its independence, the right to own private land and establish private farms was restored. The experience gained in agriculture by my father, myself, and my husband, as well as our living environment, encouraged us to continue farming. Therefore, after the change in regime, we acquired our first 15 hectares of land and 4 cows, and that is how our farm's story began.<\/p>\n

    1. How long have you been involved in agricultural activities? How has the agricultural industry in Lithuania changed during this period?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

      We have been developing our farm for 32 years. During this period, the Lithuanian agricultural industry has changed dramatically. From collective farms and a planned economy to a free market. One of the biggest changes in the Lithuanian agricultural industry and in the development of our farm occurred when Lithuania joined the European Union. As the country's economy improved, the agricultural sector became strategic, receiving additional financial support. New opportunities also opened up to acquire Western, high-quality machinery. This has allowed Lithuanian farms to increase their productivity, the quality of their work, and to have more advanced machinery required to achieve the best results.<\/p>\n

      1. The most important areas for developing a successful farm, and the reasons why, are:\n\n* **Soil Health:** Healthy soil is the foundation of any farm. It provides nutrients for crops, retains water, and supports beneficial microorganisms. Improving soil health through methods like crop rotation, cover cropping, and organic matter addition leads to higher yields, better crop quality, and reduced reliance on synthetic fertilisers and pesticides.\n\n* **Water Management:** Access to clean and sufficient water is crucial for crop and livestock survival and productivity. Efficient irrigation systems, water conservation techniques, and protecting water sources from pollution ensure a reliable supply, especially in areas prone to drought.\n\n* **Sustainable Practices:** This encompasses a wide range of methods that minimise environmental impact and ensure long-term viability. This includes integrated pest management, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, preserving biodiversity, and using renewable energy sources. Sustainable practices not only benefit the environment but can also reduce costs and improve the farm's resilience to climate change.\n\n* **Technological Adoption:** Embracing appropriate technologies can significantly boost efficiency, productivity, and profitability. This can range from precision agriculture tools like GPS-guided machinery and drones for monitoring crops, to advanced data analysis for better decision-making, and improved livestock management systems.\n\n* **Market Access and Diversification:** Understanding market demands, building strong relationships with buyers, and exploring diversified income streams (e.g., direct sales, agritourism, value-added products) can enhance profitability and reduce risk associated with relying on a single crop or market.\n\n* **Knowledge and Training:** Continuous learning and skill development for farmers and farm workers are essential. Staying updated on new farming techniques, best practices, and market trends ensures that the farm can adapt to changing conditions and adopt innovative solutions.\n\n* **Financial Management and Planning:** Sound financial planning, including budgeting, record-keeping, and access to appropriate financing, is vital for investment, managing cash flow, and ensuring the long-term financial health of the farm.<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

        Regarding our farm, I believe that some of the main factors that have allowed it to grow are adaptability to the environment, efficient use of available resources, and the application of innovation on the farm. Our farm is located in southwestern Lithuania, in the Marijampol\u0117 region. This region has little fertile land, making it difficult to achieve high yields. Therefore, our farm is mixed. We use less fertile land for pastures and growing feed for cows, and more fertile land for crop production. We are also developing a circular economy approach on the farm, which allows us to utilise our resources as efficiently as possible. For example, we are reducing the amount of chemical nitrogen fertilisers by using slurry in crop production to fertilise the fields. We also plan to use electricity generated by a biogas plant on the farm. Another important aspect that we focus heavily on is having an innovative fleet of high-quality agricultural machinery. Our work efficiency and the quality of land cultivation directly depend on this, and it allows us to achieve the desired results.<\/p>\n

        1. What is important to you when choosing agricultural machinery for your farm? <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

          The main things that are important to us when choosing equipment are quality, retained value, and after-sales service.<\/p>\n

          1. When did the first Fendt agricultural machinery arrive on your farm and what was it? What led to the choice of Fendt machinery? Should your Fendt machinery be equipped with the FendtONE option, we would kindly ask you to comment on why you decided to purchase it and what the advantages of working with the FendtONE option are, such as any change in work quality. <\/em><\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

            In 2007, we purchased our first Fendt 933 tractor. As of today, we now have a total of 14 Fendt tractors of various powers. While developing the farm, we always aim to work with the most innovative, highest quality equipment, as this allows us to achieve the best results. Therefore, Fendt tractors were no exception. Our choice was driven by the economy of Fendt. The Fendt Vario transmission ensures low fuel consumption. This is one of the most important aspects for us in reducing farm expenses. The Vario transmission also guarantees comfortable work for the operator, as controlling the tractor does not require much attention. This is important to us because we have to work long hours during the season. When working with Fendt, even after a long day, you feel good! Another important aspect of why we use Fendt tractors on our farm is that the controls for all Fendt tractors are analogous, which allows for quick operator integration; no additional training is required when changing tractors depending on the work that needs to be done on the farm.<\/p>\n

            1. Favourite Fendt product. What tasks do you use your Fendt machinery for?<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

              On our 1000-hectare arable farm, the Fendt 1050 Vario tractor has proven to be the most beneficial for us. It is a high-powered, versatile tractor. We can use this tractor on our farm for both soil cultivation tasks and transport. It is also the most economical tractor in its class.<\/p>\n

              When it comes to livestock farming, I would highlight the Fendt 7 Series tractors. We currently have two Fendt 720 Vario and 722 Vario. The stepless gearbox, automatic steering allow for quick, precise, and economical feed preparation work. They have proven particularly useful for mowing operations and for transporting harvested grain from fields to storage during the season. It is a versatile tractor, suitable for carrying out most farm tasks.<\/p>\n

              1. What are your future plans for developing the farm? <\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

                We want the farm to be able to flourish in the future and for the younger generation to want to work on it. Therefore, we do not stop researching the best practices for agricultural development worldwide. Every year we visit various agricultural exhibitions and tour some of the most advanced farms in both Europe and America. One of our key future projects is to create a sustainable ecosystem of our existing farms, where they can effectively and directly complement each other. In the near future, we plan to build a bio-power plant, which will allow us to supply the farm with electricity using the slurry available on the farm. We also continuously research the latest agricultural machinery solutions and their applicability in making the farm more efficient. Farm development is a process that requires constant interest.<\/p>\n
