A modern cultivator possesses three main functions – weed control, encouraging the germination of seeds in the field, straw incorporation, and restoring damage caused by soil compaction.
In order to achieve the highest yield from crops, they must be able to grow without competition from weeds and volunteer plants. For effective weed control, the mouldboard plough must prepare the soil – the soil must be finely crumbled, with seeds sown near the surface and firmly pressed into the ground to retain moisture. Once the plants have germinated, the field can be cultivated again or sprayed with herbicides to eradicate weeds before sowing.
Large quantities of straw contain valuable nutrients, beneficial for future crops. Straw decomposes fastest when incorporated into the top soil layer (5 cm thick), which has plenty of oxygen and actively working aerobic bacteria. Thus, immediately after harvesting, mixing straw and other plant residues into the top soil layer (5 cm) promotes nutrient release. As sowing time approaches, undecomposed straw should be pressed deeper into the soil, leaving a clean soil surface.
The third function of a tine cultivator is to repair damage caused by soil compaction. Heavy machinery, especially when used on wet soil, compacts the ground, hindering root growth and soil drainage. After harvesting, it is important to restore
the soil structure. This ensures an adequate balance between water retention and drainage, proper root development, and the absorption of necessary nutrients from the soil.
The tines of the Karat cultivator are attached to the frame at approximately 28 centimetre intervals. The working width can range from 3 to 7 metres. The aim is to ensure intensive mixing of soil and straw.
Flexible use. Soil cultivation technology must change depending on the time of use and location. Immediately after harvest, subsoilers with wing shares are recommended for maximum loosening of the topsoil. This helps to keep weed and volunteer seeds, and stubble close to the soil surface. When it is necessary to restore the structure of compacted soil and incorporate stubble deeper, subsoilers with narrow points are more suitable. The „Karat“ design allows for quick and easy replacement of the shares working parts.
The tines are equipped with concave discs which effectively level the soil surface. The rear roller provides the necessary soil consolidation. A wide selection of LEMKEN rollers ensures that the correct roller is used, taking the soil type into account. The LEMKEN Karat tine cultivators are available in various working widths:
The chassis axle of the semi-mounted tine cultivator „Karat“ is integrated in the middle of the unit. The tine cultivator is compact, stable, and highly manoeuvrable.
Farmers thinking about the future recognise the value of having one cultivator that can be used for various cultivation tasks – whether it's shallow stubble cultivation for weed control, or deeper cultivation to restore soil structure.
There are seven different forms of LEMKEN cultivator tines available, for various working and soil conditions, and for working depths from 5 to 30 m. Four brazed carbide plates ensure an exceptionally long service life for the tine points.
Rabbit spring guard. „The “Karat" tillage cultivators feature a well-thought-out automatic tines protection system – upon encountering an obstacle, the tine lifts high and then quickly returns to its working position.
Automatic comparison disk adjustment. When the working depth of the „Karat“ cultivator is changed, the working depth of the rear levelling discs changes in parallel without requiring additional adjustment.
Hydraulic depth control for continuous operation. The semi-mounted Karat disc harrow's working depth is set hydraulically in the standard configuration. The working depth can be hydraulically adjusted from the tractor cab.
Simple adjustment. The working depth of all trailed Kverneland stubble cultivators can be adjusted tool-free in stages from 5 to 30 cm. For working widths of 3 and 3.5 metres, the working depth is set using pins at the rear of the implement.
Tractor wheel slip is reduced with a weight transfer system. All semi-mounted hydraulically folding „Karat“ ploughs are equipped with a hydraulic cylinder for weight transfer.
Optimal refuelling even when working in depth. When working at a depth of 30 cm, it is very important to have sufficient weight to ensure the necessary soil compaction.
